Music at St John’s

Music is an important part of the life and worship of St John’s. We have a Junior Choir, an Adult Choir, a Family Service Group and St John’s Songbirds. St John’s is fortunate in having a wonderful 3-manual organ. For more details about music at St John's, .

The Choir sings at services every week and on feast days and special occasions. Our repertoire extands over six centuries and you can hear some of it on our Youtube channel.

Junior Choir

The Junior Choir consists of between 12 and 20 girls and boys whose ages range from 7 to 14 years. Full training is given, following the RSCM’s Voice for Life scheme and the RSCM Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards. We are particularly proud of our five Gold Award holders (pictured), who have recently been joined by a sixth. This, the highest Voice for Life Award, requires the candidates to demonstrate exceptional loyalty, industry and musicianship, which is tested in an hour-long one-to-one examination, with substantial written preparation.

We run a waiting list for the Junior Choir. To add a name please .

The Juniors usually sing at the 10:30am Communion service on Sundays. There is provision for them to join the Junior Church or Salt & Pepper groups during the service. Practices are every Wednesday 6:30-7:30pm at the church.

Adult Choir

Juniors move up to the Adult Choir at the end of school year 9 or, for boys, when their voice changes.

The Choir has a wide range of ages and experience. Adults sing at the 10:30am and 5:30pm services on Sundays, though there is no pressure to do both, and of course also at the major festivals. Rehearsals on every Wednesday 7:45-9:00pm.

Family Service Group

The Family Service Group plays and sings once a month, on the second Sunday, at the 10:30am service. We practise once a month too, on the preceding Wednesday evening from 7:45 to 9:00pm, in the church.

We currently have 2 violins, a cello, flute, 2 oboes, clarinet, trumpet, horn, trombone, keyboard, guitar, drums, handbells and a group of singers.
